February Challenge: Verb and Verb Complement Mastery – Outlier Linguistics

February Challenge

Master Mandarin verbs & verb complements!

Fix my what?!

Verbs (看、作、吃、想) and verb complements (-到, -完, -不下去, -不出来, etc.)

Do you find Mandarin verb complements confusing?

You know what I mean...

● You struggle to understand sentences like "我寫完作業了" (wǒ xiě wán zuòyè le), and you're left wondering why “完” is even there—or how to use it in your own sentences.

● You hesitate to use phrases like "跑上來了" (pǎo shànglái le) because you're not sure which directional word to choose, so you just avoid it altogether.

● You hear native speakers use complements like "得懂" (de dǒng) or "不了" (bù liǎo), but they feel too complex, and you’re not sure where to even begin learning them.

● You feel stuck relying on basic, overly simple sentences because you don't know how to add detail or nuance with complements.

If these struggles make you want to avoid using complements entirely…

You’re definitely not alone!

Everyone struggles with verb complements at some point in their Mandarin learning journey.

They don’t work the same way as verbs in other languages, and trying to piece them together on your own can feel overwhelming.

Even the grammar guides and example sentences you’ve seen don’t make it much clearer—how do you actually use them in conversation?

It might seem like complements will always be that intimidating part of Mandarin grammar that’s out of reach.

But now there’s a clear path to mastering them!

What if you could finally understand how complements work?

What if you could use them confidently and correctly in natural speech, instead of overthinking every sentence?

What if you could stop avoiding nuance and start expressing yourself with precision and ease?

It's all possible when you sign up for the
February Verb & Verb Complements Mastery Challenge!

With your coach...

John Renfroe
Co-founder, Outlier Linguistics

We’ve designed a 28-day program to help you master Mandarin verb complements, the key to expressing ideas with precision and confidence. You’ll learn exactly how to use all 8 types of verb complements—step by step—and get plenty of guided practice to make them second nature.

And did I mention? Mastering verb complements is one of the fastest ways to take your Mandarin to the next level.

By the end of the program, you’ll see a huge improvement in your ability to build natural, nuanced sentences. Plus, you’ll have the tools and knowledge to keep improving long after the challenge ends!

This program is carefully crafted to help you:

1. Understand how complements work, why they’re used, and when to use them.

2. Practice using them in real-life contexts, so you’ll feel confident applying them in conversations.

3. Drill essential structures so that they become second nature, no matter how complex the sentence.

Each day has specific, actionable tasks designed to:

1. Teach you to recognize and apply verb complements like results, directions, and possibilities.

2. Build precision and clarity in your grammar, helping you construct sentences that sound natural and polished.

3. Give you practical tools and examples, so you’ll fully understand how complements fit into everyday Mandarin.

Just 15-30 minutes a day is all it takes.

All you need to do is show up and complete the tasks we’ve planned for you each day.

The results?

By the end of the 28 days, you’ll have:

● A clear understanding of how to use Mandarin verb complements naturally and accurately…

● The ability to incorporate these complements into your speech with confidence and ease, boosting fluency and comprehension…

● The tools to express yourself more clearly and accurately in Mandarin, no matter the context.

What You'll Get...

The concept is simple yet incredibly effective!

Every day, for 28 days, you’ll complete carefully designed tasks to master Mandarin verb complements, the key to building natural and precise sentences.

Days 1–2: The Priming Phase

The first two days will introduce you to the 8 types of verb complements, their structure, and how they’re used in context. Through videos and foundational lessons, you’ll learn to recognize:

● Result complements like 完 (wán, finished) and 到 (dào, achieved).

● Directional complements like 上 (shàng, up) and 下 (xià, down).

● Degree complements, state complements, and more.

This foundational knowledge will prepare you for the intensive practice ahead. But here’s the catch: knowing isn’t enough. To truly master verb complements, you need to use them in context and build muscle memory.

Days 3–28: The Drilling Phase

For the next 26 days, you’ll rotate through 8 focused cycles, each targeting a specific type of complement.

Every cycle includes:

Chorusing drills: Practice key sentences aloud to build fluency.

Dialogues: Apply complements in natural, conversational contexts.

Short passages (短文): See how complements are used in more complex, realistic examples.

We’ll give you everything you need for each day—you just have to show up and complete the tasks. It’s like shooting free throws in basketball: repetition builds precision. Here, repetition will build your confidence with verb complements.

AND

Every week, we’ll host group Q&A and coaching sessions to help you overcome any roadblocks. These sessions are scheduled to accommodate various time zones, ensuring you get the support you need.

You’ll also gain access to the Verb Complement Mastery Community—a lively cohort of learners going through the challenge with you. Share tips, find accountability partners, and celebrate your wins. Many past participants have built lasting friendships through our challenges!

The Results

By the end of the 28 days, you’ll have practiced using verb complements hundreds of times.

You’ll be able to:

Frequently Asked Questions

What level is the challenge for?

If you're at least HSK2-3 and struggling with verbs or verb complements in Mandarin, this challenge is for you. We'll be giving you comprehensive vocab lists in case there are words you don't know. But even if you're at a much higher level, if you struggle with particles, this challenge will be beneficial. You'll probably already know all of the vocabulary, so you can just focus on the usage of the particles themselves.

How can I access the challenge?

Mobile, desktop, laptop, tablet... The challenge is super user-friendly and you'll be able to log on from anywhere!

What exactly will I learn? How will this challenge help me?

During this challenge, we’ll start by introducing the 8 main types of verb complements and explaining how they work. You’ll learn how to describe results (我寫作業了 | 我写作业了 – I finished my homework), directions (他跑教室了 | 他跑教室了 – He ran into the classroom), possibilities (這麼重的箱子,我搬不動 | 这么重的箱子,我搬不动 – This box is too heavy for me to move), and more.

Once you’ve got the basics down, we’ll move into focused practice cycles for each complement type. You’ll dive into:

Result complements: Talk about completed actions and their outcomes.

Directional complements: Accurately describe movement in and out, up and down, toward and away.

Degree complements: Express how well or to what extent something is done.

State complements: Add detail about the state resulting from an action.

...and more.

Through daily practice, you’ll chorus sentences, repeat dialogues, and study short passages to build muscle memory for using these complements naturally and fluently.

But improving isn’t just about speaking—it’s also about listening. By the end of the challenge, you’ll have trained your ear to recognize verb complements in real-world conversations, giving you a sharper sense of how they work. Your sentences will sound more natural and nuanced, and your ability to understand native speakers will take a big leap forward.

What's so special about this method anyway?

Verb complements in Mandarin are tricky because they don’t map neatly onto anything in most other languages. They’re uniquely Chinese, and many learners struggle to grasp them because of three common problems, all of which this challenge is designed to fix:

Confusion about how verb complements work—their structure and usage aren’t intuitive for most learners.

Lack of practice applying complements in real sentences—it’s one thing to learn them theoretically, but another to use them fluently in speech.

Fossilized habits of avoiding complexity—many learners stick to basic sentences, leaving complements out entirely because they feel too hard to use naturally.

Most learners touch on complements early in their studies but don’t master them. This leads to gaps in both understanding and application, which become harder to fix over time.

With the “Verb and Verb Complement Mastery Challenge,” you’ll drill complements systematically until using them becomes second nature. You’ll gain a clear intellectual understanding of their structure and function, and, more importantly, you’ll practice them so thoroughly that you’ll be able to use them in real speech without hesitation.

The magic of this method lies in its focus on repetition and context. The daily drills sharpen your understanding, while the real-world examples and chorusing build muscle memory. Each day’s practice helps you internalize how complements fit into natural sentences.

At first, the progress may feel slow—it takes time to rewire the way you think and speak. But as you complete your reps, the complements will start to feel natural. By the end of the challenge, you’ll have a newfound confidence in using Mandarin verb complements that will amaze you.

I'm not sure I can commit for 30 days

Your daily tasks should only take 30 minutes—sometimes less. The principle of the challenge is, "do a little each day—consistently—and big results will follow." 30 minutes is a pretty manageable amount of time to devote to your Chinese.

You can break it up into 5 minute chunks throughout the day:
• 5 minutes after breakfast
• 5 minutes on your lunch break
• 5 minutes before dinner
• 5 minutes while waiting for the bus
• and so on
...whenever is convenient for you!

The secret sauce is the consistency - working at it for a little bit of time every day. You'll be amazed at the massive progress you make from simply showing up every day to give focused attention to one aspect of your Chinese!

What if I decide the challenge isn't for me?

All of our products come with a 30-day money back guarantee. If you are unsatisfied with it for any reason, reach out to me at any point during the challenge and I'll issue you a full refund.

How long do I have access to the course after the end of the challenge?

How does "lifetime access" sound? While the challenge is 30 days, you will have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like.

What exactly does "lifetime access" mean?

In practical terms, it means the course materials will be available online for as long as Outlier is in business. If we do ever go out of business or otherwise need to remove the course for any reason, we'll make the material available for you to download for a period of at least 6 months.
