What level should I be at to join the community?
The community is for anyone who is serious about learning Chinese, regardless of your level. It's best if you already know some Chinese, since we won't be teaching the basics here, but if you've done at least a few lessons and you want to become a better student of Chinese, this is the place for you. Specific pieces of content we create for members may not be relevant to your situation, but in general, the Community is for students of all levels.
Is this for self-studiers or people enrolled in a school?
It's for either! Even if you're enrolled in classes, most of your learning takes place outside of the classroom. Our goal is to help you become a better learner of Chinese no matter where you're learning it.
This seems like a Patreon. Why not just do this on Patreon?
1) It's easier for us (and for you!) to keep everything on one site, and 2) Patreon charges its creators a percentage of monthly revenue. Plus, we think most of our members will likely have already purchased from our site in the past, so it allows us to keep all of your purchase info in one place.
Can I cancel my subscription any time?
Absolutely! Once you subscribe, you'll have access to a Dashboard where you can control your subscription. Just cancel there, and you won't be billed again!
Will I still have access to the material once I cancel?
Unfortunately everything will only be accessible to members (aside from the occasional piece of content we release publicly), so once you cancel, your access will be revoked at the end of the billing cycle.
If I can't make it to the live sessions, will I be able to watch them later?
Of course! You'll be able to watch the replay any time. No need to worry if you can't make it!
Exactly how much content will be released each month? Will it be hard to keep up with everything?
It will vary depending on the topic, but generally we're aiming for a piece of content (video, article, livestream/Q&A, or live expert interview) each week. This kind of schedule allows us to focus on making quality, informative content, without overwhelming you with "information overload.'
I'm not learning Mandarin, but Cantonese/Hokkien/etc. Can I join?
Bear in mind that most of the people in the community will be learning Mandarin, so our advice will generally be aimed at Mandarin learners. However, much of the advice will also be applicable (with some adjustment necessary) to other Chinese languages. That being said, we love other dialects/topolects (Ash speaks Cantonese and some Taiwanese, while John has learned a bit of Cantonese), so you're very welcome to give it a shot, and if it isn't for you, just get in touch!
