Exclusive Content

Each month, we'll do a deep dive on a specific aspect of learning Chinese, chosen based on what YOU, our members, want to know. You'll get an article, video, or themed livestream/Q&A session each week!

Members-only Community

We've set up a private discussion community where you can ask questions, share ideas and resources, chat with other learners, find study buddies or accountability partners, and more!

Expert Access

We'll be doing occasional interviews with experts—people who have learned Chinese to a high level as adults. These will be live, and will include a Q&A sesson where you can ask the expert any questions you may have.

This community was made for people who want to get serious about improving their Chinese. Learning Chinese is a huge and complex project, and there are a lot of aspects that just don't get covered in most classes—you're basically left to figure things out for yourself.

We're talking about things like:

● How do you improve your tones?
● How do you learn to read handwriting?
● How do you improve your reading speed?
● How do you get used to all the different accents in Chinese?
● What's the best way to learn grammar?
● and so on.

Native-speaking teachers often struggle to help with questions like this, because they learned this stuff very differently from how non-natives learn it. They have a completely different experience than you do.

In the Outlier Chinese Mastery Community, you'll get access to members-only content addressing all of these issues and much more!

Each month, we'll choose a different topic and do a deep dive on it. You'll get a few pieces of in-depth content on the subject, like videos or articles, and we'll also be doing members-only livestreams and Q&A sessions every month. And of course, we'll be listening to YOU and covering the topics that YOU want to know about!

We'll also be doing interviews with experts—people who have learned Chinese to a high level as adults. These will also be live, and we'll do a Q&A session where you can ask the expert any questions you may have.

Not only that, but we'll also have a members-only community where you can chat with other learners, share resources and tips, ask questions, and more.

What level should I be at to join the community?

The community is for anyone who is serious about learning Chinese, regardless of your level. It's best if you already know some Chinese, since we won't be teaching the basics here, but if you've done at least a few lessons and you want to become a better student of Chinese, this is the place for you. Specific pieces of content we create for members may not be relevant to your situation, but in general, the Community is for students of all levels.

Is this for self-studiers or people enrolled in a school?

It's for either! Even if you're enrolled in classes, most of your learning takes place outside of the classroom. Our goal is to help you become a better learner of Chinese no matter where you're learning it.

This seems like a Patreon. Why not just do this on Patreon?

1) It's easier for us (and for you!) to keep everything on one site, and 2) Patreon charges its creators a percentage of monthly revenue. Plus, we think most of our members will likely have already purchased from our site in the past, so it allows us to keep all of your purchase info in one place.

Can I cancel my subscription any time?

Absolutely! Once you subscribe, you'll have access to a Dashboard where you can control your subscription. Just cancel there, and you won't be billed again!

Will I still have access to the material once I cancel?

Unfortunately everything will only be accessible to members (aside from the occasional piece of content we release publicly), so once you cancel, your access will be revoked at the end of the billing cycle.

If I can't make it to the live sessions, will I be able to watch them later?

Of course! You'll be able to watch the replay any time. No need to worry if you can't make it!

Exactly how much content will be released each month? Will it be hard to keep up with everything?

It will vary depending on the topic, but generally we're aiming for a piece of content (video, article, livestream/Q&A, or live expert interview) each week. This kind of schedule allows us to focus on making quality, informative content, without overwhelming you with "information overload.'

I'm not learning Mandarin, but Cantonese/Hokkien/etc. Can I join?

Bear in mind that most of the people in the community will be learning Mandarin, so our advice will generally be aimed at Mandarin learners. However, much of the advice will also be applicable (with some adjustment necessary) to other Chinese languages. That being said, we love other dialects/topolects (Ash speaks Cantonese and some Taiwanese, while John has learned a bit of Cantonese), so you're very welcome to give it a shot, and if it isn't for you, just get in touch!
